Loriann Darrell Named Vermont-NEA’s 2026 ESP of the Year

Loriann Darrell, a long-time para-educator, Instructional Assistant, and local leader in the Springfield School Staff Association, has been named the 2026 Vermont-NEA ESP of the Year.Loriann Darrell The NEA Education Support Professional (ESP) of the Year Award honors a member who demonstrates outstanding accomplishments and whose achievements reflect the vital role ESPs play in public education.

Lori brings 37 years experience to her work with students, and her teaching philosophy has remained consistent over the years. “I believe in building relationships with students,” she says. “Relationships are the foundation of every service we provide at school. I start from the ground up, trying to understand each student and to get to know their likes and personalities.” 

Superintendent Peter Burrows had nothing but praise for Lori’s efforts. “Lori is so deserving of this award,” he said. “Seeing first hand the amount of energy and heart she puts into each day that she's working with students is truly amazing. I know from talking with staff throughout the district that Lori is revered for her dedication and her work ethic, and her attitude that puts kids first, always! Well deserved!”

Vermont-NEA President Don Tinney was equally impressed. “[Lori’s] constant and passionate advocacy for better wages and working conditions for ESPs is remarkable and has yielded truly impressive gains for her colleagues,” he said. "Additionally, she takes it upon herself to mentor new support staff members, all while providing compassionate support to the learners she encounters each day.”

Congratulations, Lori, for this well-deserved recognition, and thank you for your tireless efforts on behalf of your peers and the students you serve.
