Riverside Middle School Students Give Back Through Art

Inspired by famous works of art and contemporary artists who granted permission for their work to be used as models, students created their own painted interpretations that will be donated to Springfield Health & Rehab and Springfield Hospital.

The project allowed students to explore renowned artists and artistic techniques, while creating artwork that will bring color, comfort, and inspiration to patients, residents, visitors, and staff.

Beyond developing artistic skills, students learned the value of community service and the impact their talents, and engagement, can have on others. Through this experience, they discovered that art can be more than self-expression—it can also be a meaningful gift that fosters connection and joy.

"Projects like this help students understand that they are, or can be, active members of the community," said art teacher Marguerite Janiszyn-Lisai. "When students have opportunities to contribute in meaningful ways, they develop empathy, responsibility, and a stronger sense of belonging. They learn that even small acts of kindness can make a difference."

The donated paintings will help create welcoming spaces while showcasing the creativity and generosity of local youth. For many students, knowing their work will be displayed and enjoyed by others has been a source of pride and motivation.

This partnership between Riverside Middle School, Springfield Health & Rehab, and Springfield Hospital demonstrates how community collaboration can connect classroom learning with meaningful service, benefiting both students and the community they call home.
